The summer is the ideal time to tackle those DIY jobs that you've been meaning to get around to. Get going now to have the perfect place by September.
Perhaps more so than at any other time of year, the summer months are perfect for getting down to a spot of DIY. The days are longer and the weather is dry – what other inspiration do you need to grab your tool box and make a start on all those jobs that desperately need to be done? Outdoor jobs take priority when the weather is so favourable. Here are our top five summertime tasks to tackle right now.
Maintain the exterior
The job of maintaining your home’s exterior isn’t just about keeping up appearances; it’s about protecting and preserving timber, tiles and stone from the elements for many years to come. Timber windows and doors should be regularly repainted to protect them from both the rain and sun. Ivy and other unwanted climbing plants should be removed from your home’s façade and drains should be cleared of debris.
Having decking built (or doing it yourself if you’re good at handy jobs) is most definitely a summer task. And, while it may seem a huge laborious task, it’s always well worth the effort. Decking can literally lift a garden, providing a lovely place to sit and appreciate your outdoor space, somewhere to socialise, and adding an extra ‘room’ to your home.
Give your garden a facelift
Depending on the size of your garden and the impact you’re looking to create, there are a few essential jobs to get onto right now. If light is an issue, consider removing the trees that block out the sun. Replace any fencing that’s seen better days and, if you’re looking to make more radical changes, now’s the time to build a pretty rockery or garden pond.
Having a new driveway laid
A smart driveway, whether pebbled or paved, is a joy to come home to and gives a property a cared-for, welcoming appearance all year round. Rather than having yours built while a gale is blowing and frost threatens to scupper your plans, take it in hand during the warmer months.
Fit new windows
In the winter, when the cold winds are soaring through the streets and a blizzard is brewing on the horizon you’ll be glad you invested in new windows during the summer months. This is exactly the right time of year to start getting quotes for new glazing, with the intention of having windows installed over the next few months. The inconvenience of temporarily being open to the elements is much more tolerable in the summer. New windows are also an excellent idea for anyone considering selling up – buyers love them.
If you’re someone with a list of tasks as long as your arm all demanding your attention, this year, take advantage of the summer weather and set about ticking some off!
