Women urged to take control of finances...

Almost a fifth of single or divorced women want to meet a rich man so they do not have to worry about money, according to a new study.

The report, commissioned by Friends Provident, also reveals that one in six think about their finances less than once a month.

Christine O'Grady, spokesperson for Friends Provident, said women "don't rank financial matters as highly on their list of priorities as they should".

"Women's earnings can often be fragmented due to them taking time off work to care for their children or older parents and as a result they need to take more care to plan for their futures."

Instead of dreaming about rich husbands, women are being urged to take control of their finances – which may involve taking out a debt consolidation loan to manage monthly outgoings.

Last week, Moneyfacts.co.uk called on personal finance customers to carry out a "spring clean" of their finance to ensure they are making the most of their money.
