Unpopularity of banks exposed by poll

Banks' loan practices are not inspiring confidence in consumers, it has been revealed.

A poll from ASDA found that three in four people believe that loans, including bad credit loans, are lent "irresponsibly" by the financial firms.

However, the survey also revealed that four in ten feel that the responsibility of being able to pay back loans is "mainly" on the customer, rather than the bank.

Gev Lynott, financial services director at ASDA, said: "It's no surprise that trust in banks has fallen sharply over recent months, but there also appears to be a strong sense of personal responsibility among our consumers who feel that taking on credit isn't a decision they should take lightly.

"We are pleased to see such a high proportion accepting that it's their responsibility."

Loans lending has been limited over recent months, as high street banks tighten their credit criteria as a result of the global financial crisis.
