The Chelsea tracks 'family loans' decline...

Many Britons are no longer giving loans to family members, as the credit crunch continues.

The recent financial downturn has meant that 78 per cent of people are cutting back on their spending in order to reduce the budgetary strain, new research from the Chelsea building society shows.

While 60 per cent said that they still wish to make the loans to struggling relatives, a total of 30 per cent said that they could no longer do so in the present financial circumstances.

When asked how they would help family members in a way which would not involve money, 54 per cent said that they would offer them free accommodation, and 51 per cent would help them with looking after their children.

Commenting, Darren Stevens at the Chelsea said: "Whereas previously Britons could rely on their family members to bail them out when they got into difficulty, now when they turn to their families as a last resort they might find that their families are also suffering the pinch. A lack of extra funds means that families have to help each other out in non-financial ways."

He added: "Britons should start taking control of their own finances through proper financial planning and saving, bypassing a potentially embarrassing situation within their own families."

The Chelsea polled around 1,000 people for its survey.
