Study claims £385m stored in change jars
Jars full of loose change in households across the UK could be more valuable than many people realise, new research has revealed.
The study by Money.co.uk found that 63 per cent of households store excess change in a pot or jar, while the average amount in such items can be totalled up to almost £25.
According to the website, this means that an estimated £385 million could be stored away in total across the UK, a figure which would gain an approximate £12 million in gross annual interest.
Chris Morling, managing director of Money.co.uk, said: "It's amazing how it all adds up.
"Twenty five pounds is hardly a king's ransom when you look at each household in isolation but, together, it seems these penny pots contain a staggering amount of money."
Recent figures published by Nationwide revealed that 79 per cent of Brits put some money into savings accounts during January.
