September lending trends 'unchanged' from August...

Despite a "rare" rise in card borrowing, there have been few changes to trends in lending and consumer credit at the major British banking groups, according to September 2007 figures from the British Bankers' Association (BBA).

However, total sterling lending in the British private sector rose to £1,394 billion, an increase of 1.4 per cent from the August 2007 figures.

The BBA said that lending to real estate companies increased by £1.5 billion last month, while lending to communication, storage and transport companies fell £0.5 billion from August.

According to David Dooks, the BBA's director of statistics, difficulties in the financial market could be one cause of fewer loan approvals, a trend which was also noted in the previous month.

"Slightly lower mortgage lending in September followed on from fewer loan approvals in August, but the recent trend is little changed and consumer credit … remained very subdued," he said.

The BBA's 225 banking members make up the world's largets international banking centre, according to the website for the trade association.
