Secured lending 'increased in April'

Levels of secured lending in the UK rose by £0.5 billion during April, according to new research.

Credit Action's latest figures also reveal that consumer credit lending fell by £0.1 billion, while the total UK personal debt at the end of the month experienced a 12-month growth of 0.8 per cent.

Total consumer credit lending to individuals reached £221 billion, the study found, while the average household debt in the UK during the month stood at £8,761 excluding mortgages.

That figure rises to £18,252 if the average is based on the number of households with any form of unsecured loan.

Recent research published by the Council of Mortgage Lenders revealed that levels of house purchase lending in Scotland fell by a third during the first quarter of 2010.

Around 9,700 loans to homebuyers in the country were approved during the period, which was down from 14,000 in the previous three months.
