Saving figures 'reach new high'

The number of people in the UK choosing to put money away in savings accounts has reached its highest figure in almost two years, new research has revealed.

Nationwide's latest study found that 80 per cent of consumers described themselves as regular or occasional savers in February 2010, the highest amount recorded since May 2008.

The number of people who think it is a good time to save has also risen by three per cent, while just six per cent of consumers regard saving as unimportant to them.

Andy Hutchinson, Nationwide's head of savings, said the statistics were encouraging.

He added: "Recent reports suggest that economic growth was greater in the last quarter than initially estimated, so hopefully this will create a positive impact for the general savings environment in the near future."

Figures from Santander recently revealed that 70 per cent of people in the UK have not switched their current account provider in the past decade.
