Rising energy costs 'make homeowners go green'

Rising energy costs are causing homeowners to be more energy efficient, according to a new survey.

The report by uSwitch found that over three-quarters of households were more energy efficient than a year ago, but that their change was motivated by price hikes rather than environmental concerns.

Around a third (36 per cent) said they had become more energy efficient due to higher bills, compared with nine per cent who wanted to protect the planet.

Energy-saving measures employed by homeowners included turning off lights when in a room (91 per cent), only filling the kettle with the amount of water needed (79 per cent) and not leaving appliances on standby (69 per cent).

Ann Robinson, director of consumer policy at uSwitch.com, said that while consumers were making changes, they were missing out on longer-term savings by being reluctant to pay for more expensive items such as cavity-wall insulation and more efficient appliances.

"The government will also be concerned as the cost of going green could stop consumers getting behind its drive to make Britain's households more energy efficient and reduce carbon emissions," she added.

According to the government, the average UK household could save £300 a year by adopting such energy-saving measures.
