Personal loan access 'to be a basic right'
Seven out of ten consumers in the UK think everyone should have access to financial services like bank accounts and personal loans, according to a new poll.
Research by the Better Banking Campaign revealed that the majority of consumers feel the availability of products should be classed as a basic right, as between five and seven million cannot access mainstream credit.
Almost 1.8 million people also do not have the right to access a basic savings bank account.
Steve Wyler, spokesman for the campaign, said: "Most people believe access to bank accounts and affordable credit are basic rights, so we want to see this as a priority for all the political parties.
"We are not talking about lending for lending's sake, we talking about responsible lending to people and businesses who want to get on."
Recent figures published by esure highlighted that 47 per cent of motorists do not consider the best loan deals available to them when researching finance for the purchase of a new car.
