People's debt problems 'can be caused by unemployment'

Unemployment is something which can be a cause of personal debt problems among UK consumers, one expert has suggested, which may concern those considering debt consolidation.

According to Louisa Parker, the Money Advice Trust's head of research and policy, the National Debtline which her organisation operates has dealt with many enquiries from jobless debtors in recent months.

She pointed out: "Back in August 2007, 11 per cent of calls coming in to the free debt helpline were from unemployed people.

"So far in 2010, around 18 per cent of callers have been unemployed."

Ms Parker was speaking in relation to official employment statistics which were released today (August 11th).

According to the figures published by the Office for National Statistics, the quarter leading up to June of this year witnessed a 7.8 per cent rate of unemployment in the UK.

In the same period, the organisation also recorded an employment rate of 70.5 per cent for people who were between the ages of 16 and 64.
