Number of available mortgage products 'reaches 2,500'...

The number of mortgage products available in the UK has reached 2,500 for the first time since May last year, it has been suggested.

Research by Moneysupermarket.com has revealed that that past month has been the third consecutive one to see an increase in available products, although the figures are still well below those recorded before the recession.

In August 2007, over 30,000 mortgage products were available on the market, which is 12 times more than current levels.

However, Hannah-Mercedes Skenfield, mortgages channel manager at Moneysupermarket.com, said the figures were "good news for buyers".

"Passing the 2,500 barrier does suggest that those looking for a mortgage are finding more and more choice, and where there is choice, there is competition," she explained.

The release of the research has come after Moneyfacts published a study which revealed that rates on two-year fixed mortgages are now 0.24 per cent lower than in November last year.
