More people 'regularly saving each month'

A growing number of people are regularly putting money away into savings accounts, new research has revealed.

The study by NS&I has revealed that 47 per cent of people in the UK now save on a monthly basis, which is a rise of two per cent on figures recorded by a survey four years ago.

It was also revealed that people are generally saving around six per cent of their take-home income, which is the same as figures from 2005.

Tim Mack, NS&I's savings spokesperson, said: "Many people are now putting a few more pounds away each month for greater peace of mind.

"But when expressed as a percentage of monthly income saved, it is evident that Britons don't seem to have made saving any more of a priority in 2009 than they have over the past five years, despite the economic downturn."

Recent research by Bright Grey suggested that the average Briton could be failing to properly calculate their monthly essential spend.
