Low-carbon housing 'a success'...

The low-carbon buildings scheme set up by the government has been "more than successful" in encouraging the development of more environmentally-friendly buildings.

A spokesperson for the Ecology Building Society (EBS) noted that more people are building greener houses and that more houses are being renovated to meet better environmental standards.

Marketing manager of EBS Jenny Irwin also noted that there have been a large number of requests for grants to install microgeneration technologies in the home as they can be expensive.

She said she believed "there is not enough [grant] money available for everyone that wants [microgeneration technologies]", as costs can reach thousands of pounds. The Department of Trade and Industry has so far issued close to £6.9 million in grants for these technologies.

Another option for covering the cost of installation of greener technologies could be through use of a loan.

The EBS was established in 1981 and focuses on properties that give ecological benefits through their design or construction.
