Liverpool is the most trustworthy city finds report

Liverpudlians are the most honest and trustworthy people in the UK, according to a new study.

Research out today from More Than shows that Liverpool was the safest place to leave a bicycle, following a social experiment.

'Scousers' often get bad press, but it was over four hours before an opportunist thief walked away with a new bike left unlocked in the city centre, compared to the national average of two hours 22 minutes.

In the capital however, it took just 17 minutes for the bike to disappear.

The number of bikes stolen from UK streets every year is estimated at 300,000 - equating to a bike snatched every 105 seconds. Only five per cent of bikes are ever recovered and returned to their rightful owners.

Bicycle sales are up nearly a quarter on last year as people look for cheaper travel alternatives in the recession, but cyclists are being warned that June is the busiest month for cycle theft.

Last week, six bikes worth £12,000 were stolen from the family home of a Wales and Great Britain cyclist.
