Lib Dems plan 'energy loans'...

The Liberal Democrats have today announced plans for an energy efficiency loan for the home.

Many people are paying too much for their fuel bills due to the fact that their homes are poorly insulated, the Lib Dem leader Sir Menzies Campbell claimed. The new plans launched today would provide people with a loan to cover the cost of improvements, which would then be paid back through energy bills.

The Lib Dem environment spokesperson Chris Huhne told the BBC: "Millions of people struggle to pay their fuel bills each winter, yet are unable to afford improvements on their homes to make them more energy efficient."

Investments in home improvements could reduce energy bills by over £300 a year, the Liberal Democrat's findings show and they propose a "long-term loan" as the best way of funding these.

The plans, which also involve tough new regulations on all newly built houses and a "cap and trade" scheme for energy companies, would "significantly cut fuel bills" as well as having the potential to reduce Britain's carbon dioxide emissions by up to 31 million tonnes.
