Lib Dem reveals student loans non-payments...

Student loans are not being paid by around one-third of recent graduates, it has been revealed.

The government has admitted that 400,000 of the 1.2 million university graduates since the introduction of the loans in 1998 are not currently making contributions.

This is because, in many cases, they are not earning enough to qualify for repayments.

Currently, the threshold stands at a salary of £15,000 a year.

The situation has emerged following a parliamentary question from the Liberal Democrats, whose universities spokesman Stephen Williams said that the trend was likely to continue with the credit crunch.

"As the financial crisis worsens the burden on new graduates is going to be even greater," he commented.

Speaking to the Guardian, National Union of Students president Wes Streeting said that the 4.8 per cent added to the loans each year to cover inflation was also not helping matters.

He told the newspaper that it made a "myth" of government claims that the loans were cheap to pay back.
