Keep on top of debt, says Halifax...

People should concentrate on paying their bills and speak to their providers and another bank or building society if they are in financial difficulty, according to Halifax.

Gareth Mackie, a spokesperson for the bank, said: "The main pressures on savers are rising costs, like day-to-day living costs, which put pressure on people's ability to save."

Recent research by Sainsbury's Bank found that almost half (43 per cent) of those under 24 and a similar proportion (41 per cent) of the over 65s said they were not able to save anything.

Another report by Help the Aged and Barclaycard showed that a quarter of those approaching retirement have not managed to pay off their debt.

Mr Mackie asserted that, as consumer borrowing is an aspect of today's economy, it may well begin to have an impact as the cost of borrowing keeps rising.
