Jobless rate hits 2.2m

The number of UK jobless has risen by 244,000 in the first three months of 2009, taking the total out of work to 2.2 million.

Figures released a day early by the Office of National Statistics (ONS) showed the number of people claiming unemployment benefit increased by 57,100 in April, which was less than the rise predicted by some analysts.

The unemployment rate now stands at 7.1 per cent, up 0.8 percentage points from the previous quarter.

"These are all horrible figures, but the claimant count unemployment data offer some glimmers of hope that the rise in the number of jobless has tailed off to some extent after surging at the beginning of the year," said Howard Archer, economist at IHS Global Insight.

A report by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development recently suggested that Britain may be one of a number of countries showing "a pause in economic slowdown".
