Inflation up again...

The consumer price index (CPI) has increased to 4.4 per cent in July, well ahead of the government's target of two per cent.

It is an increase on the 3.8 per cent that was recorded during June, according to the Office for National Statistics. The figure is also the biggest monthly jump since records began.

Strong upward pressure came from food, especially bread, meat, cereals and vegetables, and non-alcoholic drinks. Petrol increased in price by 1.2 pence per litre in July to 118.8 pence.

A small downward pressure came from recreation and culture, with the price of computer games falling in July. The price of DVDs also fell last month.

Meanwhile, the retail prices index measure of inflation, which includes mortgages, climbed to five per cent in July, up from 4.6 per cent in the previous month.

According to Legal & General, there are now 5.3 million people in the UK who are living beyond their means, which raises the possibility that more and more Brits may need to rely on personal loans to finance their outgoings.
