Household improvements 'important for environment'...

Homeowners have a "big responsibility" to reduce carbon emissions, the National Home Improvement Council (NHIC) has said.

Householders may wish to consider applying for a loan to make expensive upgrades, although the NHIC notes that many things can be done cheaply to help reduce emissions from the home.

A consultant to the NHIC, Andrew Leech, said that only 16 per cent of homes in the UK are currently insulated to required levels and noted that the perceived, rather than the actual, cost of things such as loft insulation puts many people off making the upgrades.

"It doesn't need to cost a great deal of money to make a contribution, because simple things like insulation and upgrading you boiler and also draft-proofing a property - they are the key elements that help you reduce this carbon footprint," Mr Leech said.

The NHIC represents a number of companies working in the home improvements industry, who work towards higher housing standards.
