High street sales slump in June...

High street sales fell 3.9 per cent in June, the largest monthly fall since records began in 1986, according to official figures.

Food sales fell by 3.6 per cent, while non-food sales slumped by 4.5 per cent. However, the average value of sales per week was up £5.1 billion - 3.4 per cent higher than in June 2007.

Global Insight economist Howard Archer said the data provides more evidence of slowing growth but rising price pressures.

"Until the Bank of England sees clear evidence that companies pricing power is being undermined, it will be reluctant to cut interest rates," he added.

Softer consumer demand reduces the chances of retailers passing on their costs to customers, who are struggling to finance their debts and bills.

One option for consumers who are feeling the pinch is to take out a debt consolidation loan in order to better manage their outgoings.
