Halifax named best overall lender at industry awards

Halifax cleaned up at the Legal and General's Mortgage Club Awards it was announced today.

Halifax Intermediaries picked up three awards at the Guildhall lunch in the heart of the City, which was attended by guest speaker David Smith, economics editor of the Sunday Times.

The awards recognise lender activity over the year and were voted for by 8,000 member mortgage brokers in March this year.

Mortgage Club lenders were rated against a series of criteria including products, service, sales and marketing as well as the best lender for intermediaries.

Abbey, Barclays and BM solutions also picked awards, as did Julie Waterman from Abbey for Intermediaries, who was named Business Development Manager of the Year.

Ben Thompson, director of mortgages at Legal & General, said: "Now in its ninth year, our Mortgage Club Awards have become one of the key events on the annual calendar recognising the best that lenders have to offer."

Mr Thompson went on to say it had been a very difficult year for lenders but they had maintained very high standards.

Recent figures show gross mortgage lending by building societies was £1,551 million in April 2009, compared to £1,571 million in March, and £3,921 million in April 2008.
