Gov't must take action on fuel poverty, says committee
The Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Select Committee said today that the government must take decisive action on tackling fuel poverty.
With an estimated 5.2 million households living in fuel poverty, the committee acknowledged the government's 'imminent' failure to put an end to it.
The influential group argued that the fuel allowance should be stopped for 200,000 pensioners who pay a higher rate of tax, which would save £250 million a year, which the committee argued, could be spent on better-targeted energy efficiency programmes .
Research carried out by uSwitch.com found that the issue no longer just affects pensioners. Figures show 30 per cent of pensioner household are in fuel poverty, while 20 per cent of one income families and 17 per cent of single person working households.
Tom Lyon, energy expert at uSwitch.com, says: "The select committee has identified the need for joined-up thinking from the government, the energy industry and all the different agencies involved in helping to tackle fuel poverty in the UK."
Figures show energy prices rocketed by £381 or 42 per cent last year, which saw fuel poverty jump from four million to 5.4 million households.
