Government should intervene in people's finances, says expert...

The government should intervene to help people manage their personal finances just as it does with health and environmental initiatives, according to JPMorgan Asset Management.

Jasper Berens, head of UK sales at the company, believes there is an urgent need for ministers to tell people what constitutes good financial planning.

In the meantime, consumers struggling to get a grip on their personal finances could consider taking out a debt consolidation loan to help them pay off their debts in an affordable and manageable way.

"There's a very, very clear need for this right now. People's finances are not in a good way," he told BBC Radio 5's Wake up to Money.

"We think it is something the government should get involved in now."

Debt consolidation loans are often taken out to secure a lower or fixed interest rate, or for the convenience of servicing one loan instead of many different debts.
