Equity loans 'largely unaffected by credit crisis'...

Brits considering taking out an equity loan are being reassured that the product has not been adversely affected by the credit crisis.

According to a financial adviser for Saga, equity release is a long-term product and is therefore not particularly affected by short-term instability in the economic climate.

This is because house prices and interest rates are likely to stabilise in the longer-term.

"We have not seen a dramatic change in the equity release interest rates or in a tightening of the lenders' criteria," the spokesman said.

There is an "ever-increasing demand" for equity loans due to an ageing population, a lack of personal pension provision and an increase in the number of people who own their own homes by the time they retire.

Last week the Financial Times cited a Defaqto report claiming that the equity loans market has remained relatively unscathed by the credit crunch.
