Debt 'encouraging new mums back to work'

Concerns over financial issues including debt are encouraging some new mothers back to work, according to new research.

The study by uSwitch.com found that over 50 per cent of women who have given birth tend to head back to the workplace because of financial considerations, compared to just a fifth who want to continue their career.

It also revealed that the average net household income drops 34 per cent during maternity leave, falling from £3,341 a month to £2,266.

Ann Robinson, consumer policy director at uSwitch.com, said women are having their choice of working or staying at home "stripped away" by the "financial realities of modern life".

She added: "Preparation is key for those planning a family. Check out your company's maternity policy, calculate how much you will need to survive, save money in readiness and cut down on household bills and unnecessary expenses."

In a recent column for BeatMyDebt.com, Steven Jackson said consumers could cut loan repayments through debt consolidation.
