Couples urged to boost financial awareness

New research has suggested that couples need to pay more attention to each other's financial situations.

The poll by Prudential revealed that 12 per cent of women and 11 per cent of men claim to know nothing about their spouse or partner's finances, with several also suggesting they are not interested.

However, Andy Brown, investments director at Prudential, suggested that people should be talking about the issue, particularly when it comes to planning for retirement.

"Couples should strive to have open conversations with one another but they also should aim to be constructive and use these conversations to begin laying the foundations for their retirement planning," he explained.

Mr Brown added that the issue must be approached or else couples may find it hard to put a decent plan for the future in place.

Previous figures from Prudential revealed that more than a third of women will have a retirement income below the poverty line.
