Cost of living 'forcing parents back to work'...

The rising cost of living has pushed over one million new parents back into work, according to the results of a new survey.

Price comparison site uSwitch carried out a poll that shows the number of stay-at-home parents is at its lowest level in 15 years because of the price of food, fuel and household bills.

Parents say their household would need an average income of £31,731 for one parent to stay at home. But the average annual income for a man is £28,464, dropping to £18,047 for a woman.

Ann Robinson, director of consumer policy at uSwitch, said: "Some parents would prefer to stay at home to look after their children, even if only during the early years."

If money was not an issue, then 71 per cent of working parents would choose to stay at home to look after their children.

"Families can help themselves by taking a long hard look at their household budgets to see where they can cut costs," she added.

This may involve taking out a debt consolidation loan to manage monthly payments.

According to the Telegraph, family grocery bills have risen by nearly £1,000 over the past 12 months, while the cost of petrol products is up a by a quarter.
