Consumers reminded of consequences of debt
Consumers have been warned that those who have been charged by their banks for exceeding overdraft limits will have "a black mark" put on their records, which may lead to more expensive credit later down the line.
Reflecting on the current financial landscape, the Consumer Action Group has suggested that banks can default clients in extreme situations.
However, work is being done to prevent banks from issuing fees which are deemed unfair.
Marc Gander, founder of the campaign organisation, said banks could face "super" costs if the battle against unjust charges is won. Mr Gander's organisation is one of a number of groups aiming to make the situation better for the UK public.
"The Consumer Action Group is working on a set of claim templates and letters for people to make complaints to the banks about the damage to their credit reputations, to ask for compensation for the extra expensive credit they've had to get," Mr Gander remarked.
Explaining some of the other schemes currently being undertaken, he added that moves are being made to allow people to direct any complaints they have about unfair bank treatment to the data protection registrar and the information commissioner.
