Consumers 'more loyal to banks than partners'

People in the UK tend to show more loyalty to their banks than their partners, a new study has revealed.

Research from Santander found that 16.5 years is the average length of time that people have had their current accounts, while the average person's longest relationship tends to run to just 14.1 years.

It also revealed that one in five people have had the same current account for more than 30 years.

Helen Bierton, head of Santander Current Accounts, said a long-term relationship is often more "rewarding" to people than chopping and changing.

"When it comes to current accounts, people often stay with the same provider, even though it might not be the most competitive because the prospect of switching to a new current account can be daunting," she explained.

Recent figures from Santander revealed that 43 per cent of university students are in part-time employment to support themselves through higher education.
