Consumer lending 'rose during January'

Total net lending to individuals in the UK rose by £2 billion in January, according to official figures.

Research by the Bank of England revealed that the figure represented a three-month annualised growth rate of 1.3 per cent, which marked a slight rise from the 0.9 per cent seen in December.

Net lending secured on dwellings increased by £1.5 billion, which was higher than the £1.2 billion rise seen during December.

Over 48,000 loan approvals for house purchase were confirmed during the month, while consumer credit rose by £0.5 billion.

In addition, credit card lending increased by £0.2 billion, while other loans and advances were up £0.3 billion.

The release of the Bank's figures has come after figures from the Citizens Advice Bureau revealed that its branches are dealing with 9,500 new debt problems every day.

Steep rises have been seen in concerns over energy, water and phone bills.
