Car sales boosted by scrappage scheme

Over 35,000 new cars have been ordered in the UK since the introduction of a new scrappage scheme, it has been reported.

The £300 million scheme, which was introduced last month, offers motorists £2,000 when they trade in a car or van older than ten years in exchange for a new model.

It was announced in last month's Budget by chancellor Alistair Darling to kick-start the struggling UK manufacturing industry.

Business secretary Lord Mandelson said today that the scheme has got off to a "flying start".

"Even after two weeks the sales figures are impressive. As it operates on a first come, first served, basis and cannot last forever, consumers should get in sooner rather than later for these great deals," he added.

The £2,000 grant is made up equally from government funding and manufacturers themselves and will continue until March 2010, or until all the money has been used up.

Last month, the Society of Motor Manufactures and Traders said UK car manufacturing fell by more than half in the first three months of this year, compared with 2008.
