Business loan applications 'up 17%'...

Applications for business loans have risen for the first time in over 18 months, according to new figures released by Barclays Commercial Bank.

There has been a 17 per cent increase in funds advanced to British businesses when compared with last year.

The data, based on a poll of 600 companies, shows that the strongest increase in demand has been coming from established businesses.

A closer look at the figures reveals that nine in ten applications were approved, which suggests the money was for investment and expansion purposes rather than to plug a financial shortfall.

Dr Richard Roberts, the bank's analysis director, said that the increase is attributable to a jump in demand for loans of more than £500,000, with terms stretching between five and ten years.

Entrepreneurs who apply for a loan from Norton Finance can borrow anything from £5,000 to £1 million over a period of three to 25 years.
