Brits building extensions rather than selling-up, says survey...

Almost 1.5 million new extensions are currently being built or being considered in the coming year, according to a new survey.

A study by LV=, formerly Liverpool Victoria, found that nearly one million homes are being revamped or renovated over the next 12 months rather than put on the market for sale.

The overall cost of these renovations is thought to be at least £4 billion.

Brits considering revamping their homes rather than moving may want to take out a secured loan to pay for the labour and construction costs of a new extension.

Emma Holyer, spokesperson for LV=, said: "Many homeowners told us they were spending this money so they could profit more on their homes when they do come to sell them."

Last week, GE Money said that home improvements could add £54,922 to the value of a property.

For example, a loft conversion could increase a home's value by over 12 per cent.
