Britons set to gamble on World Cup and forget saving
One third of all British adults are set to take a punt on the World Cup or National Lottery in the next two months, while 29 per cent have said that they do not intend to save during this period at all, according to a survey by Liverpool Victoria.
Some 27 per cent of people aged 18-24 will not save at all during the June or July, while the whole age group will save on average £125. The 25-34 year-old age group, on the other hand, will be saving on average £191.
In total, Britons will spend £173 million, said the company.
Nigel Snell, Liverpool Victoria's head of corporate communications, said: "While a lot of people still intend to gamble substantial amounts over the period of the World Cup, the important message about the need to save does seems to be getting through to some people."
"Encouragingly, women seem to have the right idea in this regard, gambling less and saving proportionally more," he concluded.
Last month, Alliance & Leicester's Floyd Jebson said that interest rates were currently "good for loans and mortgages but not as good for savings".
"People love low interest rates when it comes to paying back a loan or mortgage, but they are not as happy when it comes to saving," he added.
