Boy racer extras can boost premiums by £6,000

Opting for go-faster modifications on a car can add up to £6,485 to an insurance premium for young drivers, according to new research.

uSwitch.com found that choosing a sportier alternative could push premiums up to 223 per cent the value of the car for under-21s and urged young drivers to research insurance costs before they choose a vehicle.

Mark Monteiro, insurance expert at uSwitch.com, said: "In most cases, insuring cars such as the Peugeot 206 GTI will cost more than actually buying the car in the first place.

"As soon as modifications are made such as spoilers and tinted windows, premiums will only rocket further."

Buying a Peugeot 206 GTI automatically adds £6,485 to the premium, taking it from an average of £4,638 for the regular model to £11,123.

According to the Department for Transport, young drivers have three to four times as many accidents per year as older drivers.
