Bank holds interest rates at 5%...

Potential secured personal borrowers may be interested to know that the Bank of England's monetary policy committee has continued to hold interest rates at five per cent.

Experts believe the recent rise in inflation contributed to the Bank's decision, although some analysts are concerned the move will do nothing to reverse a slowing economy.

Consumer prices inflation climbed to three per cent in April and is expected to rise further as a result of soaring food and fuel prices.

Howard Archer, chief economist at Global Insight, said the sharp fall in house prices last months adds to the downside risks facing the economy.

"The Bank of England is unlikely to trim interest rates again until August at the very earliest despite markedly weakening economic activity, a moribund housing market and a deteriorating outlook," he added.

Anyone worried about the economy's prospects may want to consider taking out a homeowner loan to help them pay for large outgoings like schools fees or a new car.
