BT in bid to cut mobile call charges
BT and mobile operator 3 have teamed in a campaign to scrap the charges telecoms companies make to connect calls to each other's networks, according to reports.
Telecoms giant BT said the so-called termination charges raised £750 million for mobile operators last year and the current system is "profoundly unfair and extremely outdated".
It added that it is charged 4.7p per minute by mobile companies for every call from a BT landline to a mobile, despite the underlying costs being closer to 1p.
John Petter, managing director of BT Retail, commented: "Our customers are telling us very, very clearly that they want unlimited flat-rate unmetered tariffs that will give them the transparency, confidence and security so they can manage their household finances."
He added that termination rates "fatten the profits" of the big four mobile players at the expense of "real competition and innovation".
BT has been backed by the UK's smallest mobile operator 3, along with the Federation of Small Businesses, the National Union of Students and Carers UK, and has launched a campaign website.
A recent YouGov survey commissioned by the Carphone Warehouse found that customers want greater transparency about the cost of using mobiles abroad, the Press Association reports.
