Asking prices 'drop 3% in a month'...

Asking prices fell by 2.9 per cent over the month to November 8th, new figures from a leading property website show.

According to Rightmove, the average property in England and Wales is now put on the market at just £223,000.

This is a 7.1 per cent fall over 2007 - and the site suggests that homes are now being sold at around 20 per cent below the amount they fetched at the peak of the property boom.

Recent house price surveys from secured loan lenders have been similarly gloomy, with both Halifax and Nationwide putting the annual decline in value at around 15 per cent.

Miles Shipside, commercial director of Rightmove, said: "Some sellers could avoid months of disillusionment and despair if they started marketing at an asking price a lot closer to where the evidence indicates they are likely to end up.

"While average asking prices have fallen by 7.1 per cent over the past year, in most parts of the country you should look to at least double that discount to achieve a sale."

The monthly fall in asking prices is the largest measured by Rightmove since records began in 2002.
