200,000 Britons have 'secret credit cards'

There are more than 200,000 secret credit cards in the UK that borrowers keep hidden from their partners, a new survey has revealed.

New research from Halifax found that secretive shoppers were using the cards to keep purchases and debt hidden from their other halves.

Most of the purchases made on the secret cards cost less than £500 and included items such as electrical goods and even holidays.

Although the 217,000 secret cards in circulation only account for around one per cent of cardholders with partners, the building society warned that when applying for products in joint names, it may be necessary to have an embarrassing conversation.

"It's important that people are honest about their finances with their partner as it may affect their ability to secure products in joint names," said Adrian Bryant, head of marketing for Halifax Credit Cards.

Earlier this week the Tories announced plans to introduce warnings on all credit card bills if they win the next general election to encourage borrowers to keep on top of payments.
