1 in 4 Brits 'do not trust their banks'

A quarter of UK consumers do not have any trust in their banks, according to new research from Money.co.uk.

The poll by the website revealed that only seven per cent of Britons feel financial services companies treat them as fairly as possible, while 25 per cent do not believe they are trustworthy.

In addition, just 15 per cent of adults are convinced that switching to another provider would make a difference to issues such as the penalty charges they face.

Chris Morling, managing director of Money.co.uk, said: "The erosion of trust should be a real concern, and the perceived lack of an alternative even more so.

"Based on these findings, I believe the banks have much work to do if they are to win back our trust - particularly when it comes to individual treatment and 'fair play'."

Recent figures published by the UK Payments Administration revealed that 22 million adults used internet banking to manage their own current accounts during the first six months of 2009.
